This is a temporary and highly attention attracting sidebar topic, intended for people to write down the must have essentials of the wiki that we need to complete, before we go ahead and let more of the general public see the wiki.

Wiki will be prominent on the front of the website, maybe a mass email sent out, pinned in the FB group, maybe youtube video promoting it, who knows. How can the Wiki be expected to be promoted if it has no content? xP

We're crowdsourcing what we believe to be the essential articles and things that should be completed to an acceptable standard before going ahead and promoting the wiki down below. Please contribute to the ToDo list. Follow the syntax that already exists down below to add to the ToDo list, and be sure to sign off on your contributions with ~~~~. This will leave your wiki username signature, so people know who put what task where.

If something isn't crucial to get to an acceptable standard before publishing the wiki, don't put it on the list. The list is just for the most important things to get right :)

Content

  1. Differentials
  2. Normalized
  3. Active Focus
  4. Bates Method
  5. Blur horizon
  6. Pseudomyopia -NottNott (talk) 15:06, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
  7. Frequently Asked Questions needs to be made as a priority. Decapitalise the 'a' and the 'q' because it's calmer and looks less scammy. Actually I like capital letters now. Practically copy and paste the current FAQ into here, and expand on sections with funny images and stuff -NottNott (talk) 19:52, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Guides

  1. Guide:Start your improvement here
  2. Guide:How to reduce
  3. Guide:Main reason myopia progresses
  4. Guide:How to read a prescription guide

These will have their own 'Guide:' namespace when we get around to it, for now create them and they will be moved later. -NottNott (talk) 10:06, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Done -NottNott (talk) 08:42, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Formatting

  1. Most articles should start with the term they are describing in bold. Which I haven't done. Oops, let's go back and sort that out (at some point) -NottNott (talk) 19:52, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
  2. Reflists, and referencing. I don't even think the wiki is configged to handle these yet. When the wiki is configured there will be extensions that will make this possible and easy. Main sources used will be the blog, and clinical studies. -NottNott (talk) 21:01, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Policy & Meta

  1. Special:LonelyPages ideally would be empty. Sam.Watson (talk) 21:02, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
  2. Special:WantedPages should be minimized. This page will naturally grow as we add content, and is ripe grounds for contributors to pick something that needs researching or cross-linking. Dlskidmore (talk) 19:42, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
  3. We need LOADS of redirects. Redirects redirect one term (e.g 'Bates method') to another ('Bates Method'). To make a redirect, type #REDIRECT ArticleName as the ENTIRE article. -NottNott (talk) 19:57, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
  4. Gotta write those policies. -NottNott (talk) 21:34, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
    1. The policies are found here. -NottNott (talk) 22:32, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
    2. EM:Here to build a vision improvement resource. Inspired by Wikipedia's Here to build an encyclopedia policy. -NottNott (talk) 17:39, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
  5. Templates like {{EM}} need to be protected, when we upgrade the protection GUI with an extension. -NottNott (talk) 21:17, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Done Did it manually instead. -NottNott (talk) 21:21, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Community

  1. Discuss if a wiki category on Le Meow is necessary
  2. Video series on how to edit the wiki

MediaWiki install

Frontend

  1. Logo - still need a better one though
  2. Policies
    1. User rights policy
    2. Shortcut templates on all of the policies
    3. Silly pictures to accompany policies
    4. Admin policies
  3. Work on the bottom part of the wiki, with all of the disclaimers, copyright and stuff
  4. Tweak MediaWiki:Sidebar
  5. Need mw:Extension:Popups? Discuss. -NottNott (talk) 15:37, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Backend

  1. Discord integration that logs recent changes
  2. Change namespace of WikiMeow to Endmyopia
  3. Change the Vector skin style to look yellow and cool
    • Consider changing the default skin from Vector to Timeless. It follows the trend of "responsive web design" where the same look adapts to all screen sizes, most importantly mobile phones. "Responsive web design" sites get a higher rank on Google.
    • Alternatively, you could do what Wikipedia does, keep Vector for the desktop default and use MobileFrontend/Minerva for mobile devices. Looks a bit dated, but more people will be familiar with this setup. Heddy (talk) 02:08, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Not done. I think the guys we're going are more of the traditional type perhaps. I kind of see anything that isn't Vector or Monobook and my gag reflex goes off, because I'm a stubborn wiki editor. I'm really close-minded, I should work on that :P -NottNott (talk) 18:47, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Vector on a traditional desktop is certainly the best for editing. But most people are readers, not editors... and they're usually on a mobile device. Vector is quite unappealing on mobile devices. Always needing to zoom in and out to read text and tap links. I'd guess that seeing a desktop-only website is more likely to cause people to gag than seeing Vector on desktop and Minerva on mobile (Wikipedia's setup). Regardless of what the default is, users can always select Vector at Special:Preferences or with "Desktop view" at the bottom of the page.
I ask that you cast aside your own feelings in order to accommodate the majority of potential readers, making vision improvement information as accessible as possible. Heddy (talk) 02:39, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
I think Vector is a familiar Wiki layout to most people who read Wikipedia. Using it creates a degree of confidence and familiarity for new readers who don't have to relearn the layout of the website. mw:Extension:MobileFrontend will be installed, negating the issues somewhat for mobile users. I'm open to different skins and extensions for mobile users, definitely, will look into what can be done for mobile. Mobile optimisation is super important for SEO from what I can tell. I'd prefer to keep desktop defaulting to Vector. The Vector skin will be customised and tweaked to be more of a slice of EM, with a yellowish colour scheme instead of the default. If there are any skins you think I should add as options in preferences, please let me know! :)
(also really happy there's no debate about talk pages, now THERE'S a strong opinion I have xD) -NottNott (talk) 09:44, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Admittedly I might have originally responded with half of my brain doing something else, so I didn't think about what you had said properly. My apologies :) -NottNott (talk) 09:46, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
  1. Create 'Janitor' position with god powers
  2. Caching, duh
  3. A million other technical things I'll sort out when I get to it
  4. Mobile

Extensions that need installing (add as appropriate)

  1. mw:Extension:Scribunto
  2. mw:Extension:Cite
  3. mw:Extension:ParserFunctions -NottNott (talk) 22:35, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
  4. mw:Extension:DeleteBatch. For deleting many pages at once. Heddy (talk) 01:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
  5. mw:Extension:Replace Text. For changing text on many pages at once (maybe 'WikiMeow' to 'EndMyopia'). Heddy (talk) 01:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
  6. mw:Extension:WikiEditor. Adds useful buttons (bold, italics, etc.) and a help menu to the editor. Heddy (talk) 01:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Done -NottNott (talk) 08:30, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
  1. mw:Extension:StructuredDiscussions. Non-essential, but good to consider. Solves the problem of people not knowing how to use talk pages (how to sign with ~, how to indent with :, etc.), by replacing talk pages with a simple comment box. Heddy (talk) 01:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Not done They can take my eyes, and they can take my taxes, but they'll never take my beloved talk pages!
I feel as if a good tutorial article should solve most problems. -NottNott (talk) 08:30, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Things we shouldn't do but I want to do

  1. Joke: namespace
  2. Humour articles, like 'how much do you get paid to edit the wiki?'. We'll have a fake table with all of the rates for how much each edit costs and everything. Appropriately marked with a 'humour' notice at the top of the article that nobody can miss.
    1. Like just a bunch of satire articles roasting how people think this is all fake in general. This lets everyone inside the Endmyopia echo chamber giggle to themselves. -NottNott (talk) 21:13, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
  3. Pictures of Jake Steiner wearing glasses. Super-duper daft article, maybe not a good idea. 'hurr durr, nobody's ever seen Jake in glasses' I am intelligent -NottNott (talk) 10:08, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
