Well actually, it was active focus that found me. I started with a bit of blinking, and renewing the tear film gave me a little extra clarity, which did not last. Then I tried a bit of staring, and there was a bit of clarity that did not last. Then I tried relaxed viewing, and that also worked for a little while. After a month or two of this, active focus found me. I started to see things drift into clarity for a while, and then drift out again, without any intention or conscious effort on my part. This still happens both for close and distant vision. Why is it not continuous? Don't ask me, ask my visual cortex. It will probably tell you that what it is being asked to do is tiring, and it needs a break from time to time.
