William Horatio Bates was a practitioner of ophthalmology. He developed what has come to be known as the Bates method.

The Bates method, as is practiced today has been altered greatly from Bates' original propositions about how eyesight can be improved. Modern Bates teachers practices largely do not resemble the original method.

Bates wrote the book Perfect Sight Without Glasses.
